"Comfits, Sweetmeats, fruits and other Things preserv'd dry" (N Bradley)

Sweetmeats: "Delicacies made of fruits preserved with sugar." (Samuel Johnson)

Fruit, roots, lettuce and mallow stalks preserved in syrup were wet suckets.
When candied or crystallized they were dry suckets.

The real thing! Imported, this product is the fruit of a tree native to India, NOT the citron melon that is used in modern cooking. The citron fruit is larger than a lemon and less acidic, and was a popular ingredient in many cakes throughout England and the colonies.
